When she turned the corner into the dimly lit room, her eyes instinctively fell upon the now empty couch cushion. The young girl softly walked up to the area, searching through the mess on the coffee table for the remote, hoping for the flashing ghostliness of the television-lit room to finally fade to black. For it being such a scene of leisure, it seemed ironic how every lingering moment could leave such a sense of overwhelming tension.
Unwilling to let herself fall into the tainted throne that her father had only just relinquished, she bent to lean over the table to search through the old magazines and newspaper that were scattered about. She pushed a pile of papers to the side and accidentally nudged the short glass tumbler that was near the edge, causing the melting ice cubes to clink together. With the TV muted, the crisp chime against the glass was clear in the quiet room and caused the girl to pause
It was behind her to dwell on how unfair it was for her to be the one taking care of her father, she thought. But at the same time, it was beyond her how this unassuming drink could be the cause of it all. With youthful curiosity she reached out for the emptied glass and held it before her eyes filled with wonder. Could this elixir really be the sole reason for the unfair role reversal. As the glass twinkled in front of the television screen, the young girl couldn’t help but wonder how wrong it would be for her to switch things back.
